A recent survey showed that people mistakenly believe they have more time than they really do to escape a burning home. Fire experts agree that people may have as little as two minutes to escape a burning home before it’s too late to get out. But most Americans mistakenly believe they have at least five minutes to escape, more than twice the amount they have.
Every day, seven people die in home fires, most in homes that lack working smoke alarms. Sadly, children and the elderly disproportionately lose their lives.
As part of the Home Fire Campaign, the American Red Cross of Northwest Ohio provides FREE smoke alarms and batteries to residents of Lucas, Fulton, Henry, Ottawa, Sandusky, Wood, and Monroe County, Michigan. Smoke alarms will be inspected and installed by trained Red Cross volunteers at no cost to residents.
